How to Clean a Cowboy Hat.

To clean a cowboy hat properly, you'll need some basic supplies and the right cleaning product designed for the material of your hat. Here's a general guide on how to clean a cowboy hat:

  1. Check the Material: Determine the material of your cowboy hat. Common materials include straw, felt, leather, or cloth. Each material requires different cleaning methods and products.

2. Dust Off the Hat: Before using any cleaning product, gently remove dust and loose dirt from the hat's surface. You can use a soft-bristled brush. We recommend the M&F Hat Brim Brush in Black or Grey.

3. Spot Cleaning: For small stains or spots on felt or cloth hats, you can use a damp sponge or a specialized spot cleaning product specifically designed for your hat material. We suggest the M&F Felt Hat Cleaning Sponge.

4. Using a Cleaning Product: Depending on your cowboy hat's material, use one of the following methods:

  • a. Felt Hats: For felt hats, you can use a specialized felt hat cleaning spray or foam. Follow the instructions on the product label. Typically, you'll spray the foam on the hat, use a soft brush to work it in gently, and then allow it to dry. For light colored hats we recommend Twister Felt Hat Cleaner Light & for dark colors we recommend Twister Felt Hat Cleaner Dark.
  • b. Straw Hats: Straw hats can be cleaned with a damp cloth. Be careful not to soak the hat, as excessive moisture can damage straw materials. An easier option would be to use the Twister Straw Hat Cleaner.

5. Drying the Hat: After cleaning, reshape the cowboy hat to its original form and place it on a clean, dry towel to air dry. Do not use a hairdryer or any direct heat source, as this can cause warping or shrinking of the hat.

  • To stiffen a cowboy hat or any other type of hat, you can use a hat stiffener product. Hat stiffeners are specifically designed to add stiffness and structure to the hat's brim, helping it maintain its shape and form
  • Follow the instructions on the stiffener product carefully. Typically, you will need to spray the stiffener evenly on the inside and outside of the hat's brim. Some stiffeners may come in a spray bottle, while others might require you to apply the product with a cloth or sponge.
  • Reapply if Necessary: If you find that the hat is not stiff enough after the first application, you can repeat the process and apply another coat of stiffener. Just make sure the hat is completely dry before adding more product.

6.Storage: Once the hat is completely dry, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. You can use a hat rack or a hat box to keep it protected and maintain its shape.

Always follow the care instructions provided by the hat manufacturer or on the cleaning product label.
